Chamberlain Papers

An unrivalled source of information for local, national and international history and politics relating to the personal and political lives of Joseph Chamberlain and his children over a period of sixty-five years, the collection comprises more than 61,000 documents (including diaries, correspondence, official papers, press cuttings, and memorabilia) . It has mostly been deposited by the family, between 1960 and 1980, although regular additions are made by purchase. Included are: 14,460 papers from 1864 (but especially from 1875) onwards of Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914), industrialist, Mayor of Birmingham, first Chancellor of the University of Birmingham (1900-14), Member of Parliament, President of the Board of Trade and Colonial Secretary; 23,760 papers from 1884 onwards of Sir Austen Chamberlain (1863-1937), Member of Parliament, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Secretary of State for India and Foreign Secretary; 21,140 papers of Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940), Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Member of Parliament, Minister of Health, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Prime Minister; and 1,050 papers of Beatrice (1862-1918), Ida (1870-1943) and Hilda Chamberlain (1872-1967) for 1862-1956. There is also a long series of letters written by Joseph Chamberlain's third wife, Mary Endicott Chamberlain (1864-1957). For a fuller description see Ben Benedikz, Guide to the Chamberlain Collection (Birmingham: the University Library, 1978).
